WORKCOVER was called to investigate after an explosion at an industrial complex in St Marys left a worker with shrapnel wounds to his head and body last week. Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the Samos Polymers polyurethane-resin plant off Links Road shortly after 7am on Wednesday, after reports of an explosion.
They found a man, 50, who had been working near a bulky container of a flammable liquid, with shrapnel wounds to his head, chest and arms. A spokeswoman for NSW Ambulance Service said he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Dunheved Fire and Rescue station commander Garry Mitchell said firefighters from his station and St Marys attended the site. He said a large plastic container of a flammable liquid used to make polyurethane had exploded and blown apart the container and its metal housing. "Workers were changing out a liquid container that must have had vapour residue still inside, which exploded," he said.
North St Marys residents reported hearing the explosion. Traffic was delayed at Dunheved Circuit and Forrester Road.
