A SPOKESMAN for Penrith Council said the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce’s contribution to the region’s development could not be underestimated.
‘‘In 1927, a group of forward thinking business and community leaders joined to form the Penrith chamber,’’ he said.
‘‘It is now one of the largest chambers of commerce in NSW.
‘‘The 85th anniversary is a time to thank the many members, past and present, who have helped steer the city towards its prosperous future.’’
The chamber’s chief executive, Jill Woods, said the chamber and Penrith Council had achieved much since 1927.
‘‘We need to have connections with all stakeholders,’’ Mrs Woods said.
‘‘In this regard the chamber’s relationship with the council has continued to get stronger.’’
Back in the 1930s, the chamber and Penrith Council worked on identifying land for the building of Nepean Hospital.
Through their work, the council was able to press the state government to go ahead.
More recently, they have worked together on the future of High Street.
Shops in Penrith’s central business district have been struggling for some years in competition with large malls.
Mrs Woods said a solution may require a rethink about what sorts of business are allowed to operate there.
The council and the chamber have also worked on strategies to advance Penrith as a health and science precinct.
The council’s spokesman said it looked forward to continue working with the chamber and it was pleased to be hosting the chamber’s celebrations.
