Rider beats odds to attain dream

NICOLE Kullen, 28, is one of five athletes nominated to represent Australia at the Beijing Paralympic Games this September in Hong Kong.

The Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia nominated Ms Kullen to the Australian Paralympic Committee.

Her capacity to overcome many obstacles helped her win a place on the team but while the Australian Paralympic Committee will cover her attendance costs she needs more money for training, accommodation and ongoing medical treatment.

These are estimated at $4000 a month.

Ms Kullen's affinity with horses began when she was a toddler and her flair promised sporting success but in 1996 she became infected with meningococcal meningitis and septicemia and spent six weeks in an induced coma then another six months in hospital.

The illness meant her lower legs had to be amputated and she has been left with limited arm movement and strength and none in her hands and wrists.

``Training and competing can be draining but I'm excited to see what the future will bring to my horses and me,'' she said.

There will be a fund-raising event for Nicole at Panthers on Friday, July4 at 7pm.

Nicole will screen a video about herself and there will be a three-course meal, entertainment and sports memorabilia auction and raffles.

Tickets: Shane Skeen, scuba23@aapt.net.au or 0409010184.
