CRANEBROOK resident Jennifer Thomas's first reaction was: ``Hello? I am still here.''
Her second reaction was: ``Why aren't pregnancy, birth or infancy death talked about more?''
In January Jennifer, 27, and her husband Nick, 28, lost their son Bailey at 22 weeks gestation at Nepean Hospital.
Feeling isolated and detached they struggled to come to grips with the devastating news.
``People generally want to write it off and not talk about it,'' Ms Thomas said.
``But people who have lost a child need support and they need to talk about their loss.''
Then they found comfort in a bear. Yes, a traditional teddy bear.
``We couldn't have gotten through without the support of Bears of Hope,'' Ms Thomas said.
``Their support has been phenomenal.
``Bears of Hope specialise in the support and guidance of bereaved parents.
``They even give you a bear before you leave the hospital so you don't walk out empty-handed.''
But it doesn't stop there.
Monthly meetings with other parents in similar situations provide assistance and reassurance that you are not alone.
Established in 2006, Bears of Hope prides itself on providing comfort and healing for broken hearts the Thomas family included.
``It is an open forum where you can share your story,'' Ms Thomas said.
``You would be surprised how much listening and talking about this situation can help.
``No one wants to be in the situation, but together we work through the different issues.
``And I have made a lot of friends as well.''
The inaugural Bears of Hope gala night is on Saturday, October 10, at the Courtside Function and Event Centre (Tennis Centre) Rod Laver Drive, Sydney Olympic Park. Details: bearsofhope.org.au.
