SING Australia Penrith lets anyone sing anything, any way they like.
Its members give voice to modern pop, Abba, Elvis and the Beatles as well as traditional folk songs and musicals.
No member needs to read music or to have any previous singing experience.
"It's more like karaoke than a choir," group member Phil Emery said.
"In a choir things are very structured; you all have to sing the same things in the same way at the same time.
"Here, you just sing."
Group leader Doreen Prowse said Sing Australia was a type of franchise operation, with different chapters around the country.
"We started in Penrith in October 2010," Mrs Prowse said.
"Last year we did some public performances.
"We often visit nursing homes."
But she said the group's aim was to just enjoy singing.
Sandra Ford said she liked the group's informal nature.
"We have no homework; we just sing, have some supper and chat with each other," Mrs Ford said.
"I've always liked singing; I grew up in the era of the Beatles and my favourites are Abba, the Carpenters, Neil Diamond and I Dreamed a Dream [from Les Miserables].
"This is a great stress-free way to switch off after work."
Pianist Heather Zajac said although she played a crucial role within the group, she felt no pressure.
"There's such a range of songs and I'm not playing to a critical audience," Mrs Zajac said.
Mrs Prowse said the group were always looking for more members.
