Traffic system does away with lights

19 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM

HE has promised the seemingly impossible giving people more time.

Using simple logic, Jozef Goj has invented a traffic system where cars don't stop at intersections, eliminating traffic lights.

Heck, he's even worked out the roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe.

Mr Goj said the roadworks at the M4/Northern Road interchange ``were not going to achieve much'' apart from easing the flow for left-turning traffic. The works aim to extend the north- and south-bound right-turn bays and modify the lights to control the left lanes heading east from and to the M4.

Mr Goj, a former engineer from Colo Heights, has invented separate lanes for left- and right-turning traffic at intersections.

For example, to turn right when leaving a motorway, we exit from the left lane.

With Mr Goj's design you would move to the right-hand lane to turn right, drive up the ramp and enter the turnabout with each motorist taking turns, eliminating ``the stupidity of giving way on a roundabout''.

Motorists would have to slow down enough to enter safely, but would not stop.

So why is his system better than the roadworks taking shape?

``For a start, there are no traffic lights,'' he said.

Meanwhile, an RTA spokesman told the Star in September the RTA had conducted a study including concept designs to install traffic lights at the intersection of Glenmore Parkway and The Northern Road.

Last week the spokesman said investigations into the upgrade were continuing.

Mr Goj believes a terrasphere turnabout would work best.

``Traffic lights do nothing except regulate vehicles,'' Mr Goj said.

``You're sitting there wasting fuel, wasting time ...''

Mr Goj said during a meeting with the RTA in January, he was told a turnabout would cost $25-$30 million.

``How much is it going to save? How much road rage are you going to reduce?'' he said.

``I'm the only one in the world who's come up with a solution.''

An RTA spokesman said the upgrades to The Northern Road and M4 interchange, Mulgoa and Jamison roads intersection and the Mulgoa, Spencer and School House roads intersection were a ``significant investment'' in the Penrith area.
