THE Penrith Basketball Association hosted a quadruple-header against various associations at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre on Saturday, in round 15 of the NSW State League Basketball competition.
The two Penrith youth league teams were on adjoining courts in the two early games. The seventh-placed Penrith men defeated the tenth-placed Sutherland Sharks 96-68 on court one, while the last-placed Penrith women were crushed 115-31 by the competition-leading Bankstown Bruins on court two.
The seventh-placed Penrith state league women hosted the eighth-placed Central Coast Power and may have lost their battle to avoid the wooden spoon, losing 76-75 in double overtime, dropping to the bottom of the ladder.
The second-placed Penrith state league men overwhelmed the fourth-placed Power in the final game of the night, with the lopsided 103-55 victory giving the Panthers a minor contest this close to the playoffs.
Youngsters Angus Brandt and Sean Albert carved up the Sharks in the youth league game, with the young Panthers team exciting fans with a frenzied running game.
The action got out of control for the home team, at several times during the game, but the Sharks did not have enough big guns to capitalise on the Panthers' occasional sloppiness or to stop Brandt and Albert in a devastating first half.
Brandt continued to punish the Sharks in the second half, leading his teammates in another point-scoring romp to wrap up a 28-point victory.
The Penrith state league women had the hard luck story of the night.
They won the first quarter against the Power but were unable to prevent the visitors from whittling down the margin in each remaining quarter.
