Sheedy one of the mighty

HUNTING out every kid in western Sydney looking for an opportunity is the first priority of AFL great Kevin Sheedy.

Sheedy was earlier this month named as head coach of the AFL's new Western Sydney club at Blacktown Olympic Stadium .

The man for tomorrow's team has so far had an outstanding career, including 251 games with Richmond, a 27-year Essendon coaching role with four premiership wins and coaching the Australian International Rules team between 2005 and 2006.

During the announcement Sheedy likened the challenge of building the new club to that of building the Sydney Opera House.

``We have the opportunity over the next 20-30 years to build that great architecture,'' he said.

When asked what the goals were for the 2012 team, Sheedy focused on the long-term value of the team instead, noting there were Victoria clubs which had not won premierships for 25 years.

``The people of western Sydney will win in opportunities there's no doubt about that,'' he said.

For the past two years Sheedy has acted as an AFL ambassador throughout Queensland and NSW, and he said in that role he had seen the passion of the people of the west.

``In life you have to take risks and challenges,'' Sheedy said.

``We are challenging the idea AFL is all about Melbourne ... It's nearly 30 years since the Swans came to Sydney and that was a great decision.''

AFL Commission member Sam Mostyn said that when looking for a coach they searched for a motivator with a track record of success and community engagement.

``Kevin Sheedy ticked all those boxes,'' Mostyn said.

The Greater Western Sydney team will play its first season in 2012.

Game on.
