Ice-hockey trio glides to top

03 Feb, 2010 04:19 PM
THE stellar performances of Penrith Phantoms Ice-Hockey players Rachael White, George Kozumplik and Ashleigh Brown (pictured) have earned them a string of awards from the NSW Ice-Hockey Association.

Rachael, 23, was awarded both NSW Most Valuable Player and NSW Highest Point Scorer in the Open Women's league for 2009.

``It's good to be recognised for the time and effort you put into the sport,'' she said.

Rachael scored 103 points to receive the Highest Point Scorer award for the fifth year in a row.

It's also the second year running she has received the title of Most Valuable Player.

``It's a fun sport but it's also physically demanding and you have to work hard to be good,'' she said.

She has represented Australia at World Championships in Finland, Italy, Slovenia and England and hopes to travel to Canada or Britain for competitive league.

George, 39, was awarded NSW Most Valuable Player in the Open Age men's league.

``I was surprised as I didn't play in five of the 25 games,'' he said.

``I won last year but it was a draw so to win outright is special. It shows the first time wasn't a fluke.

``It's encouraging to win; keeps the drive going and makes all the bumps during the season worth while. I was born in the Czech Republic, where ice hockey is the national sport, so it's in my blood.''

With six teams of up to 15 players competing in the league, the title of Most Valuable Player is contested by 90 ice-hockey enthusiasts.

Ashleigh Brown, 17, was awarded NSW Best Goalkeeper in the Open Women's league for a second time.

``It's an honour to receive it again and it's really good to get recognised for your talent,'' she said.

``I started playing ice-hockey eight years ago and grew up liking the position of goalkeeper. I enjoy saving the team when they're in trouble.''
