WET and wild rapids may define her universe but Jessica Fox won’t be swept into a false sense of security.
Chasing a K1 berth at the London Olympics, Fox is halfway towards sealing her selection after a stellar showing at the Australian Open at the Sydney International Regatta Centre recently.
The 17-year-old finished as the highest-placed Australian and second overall in the K1 final cementing one of two victories required to make her Olympic dream a reality.
‘‘I was really happy with my performance because the race was really important — not only because it’s a big international event but it was the first of three Australian selection trials for the Olympics,’’ she said.
‘‘To come away with a win as the first Australian was the original goal but then to medal was even better because it was a very strong field of competitors with world champions and Olympic champions.’’
Bagging a ticket to London will require Fox to also dominate the 2012 Sprint Oceania Championships — again at the Sydney International Regatta Centre — on the first weekend of March.
She must win either the heat or final at the championships to earn a call-up although selectors view the latter result with greater importance.
‘‘The Oceania is the last two Olympic trial races so the aim is to win on the first day but if I don’t hopefully I’ll make the final and I’ll have to fight for it in that,’’ she said.
While Fox will enter the event with one triumph under her kayak, the Leonay resident refused to allow her confidence to become overly buoyant.
‘‘Winning the Australian Open sets me on the way but I’m not actually that much closer — I’ve still got to keep me feet grounded and work hard,’’ she said.
