STCLAIR Comets are hoping for a seriously successful season after signing former NRL star and Kiwi international Alex Chan.
The former Northern Eagles, Parramatta Eels and Melbourne Storm front rower has returned home after three seasons with French Super League club Catalan, which is the new home of former Cronulla Sharks' Greg Bird.
Chan, 34, has ruled out a return to NRL but plays for the Comets in the Penrith A-grade competition.
The Colyton resident has also offered to share his experiences and act as a mentor to junior Comets. His son Tiaki, 9, plays for the under-9 division-one team.
Chan and his family returned home in October and approached the Comets in January.
``I didn't want to play at the highest level again,'' he told the Star.
``I'm happy to share my experiences and pass on a few tips to anyone willing to listen.''
Chan played 61 NRL matches and two Test matches between 2000 and 2005 before heading to France and playing 65 games for Catalan.
His four children still take French lessons.
``The decision to return home was very hard,'' Chan said. ``We made so many friends and the lifestyle was unreal, but we thought that the right decision was to return home to our friends and family back here.''
The Comets A-grade team won its first-round match against Glenmore Park on forfeit but suffered a heavy loss against Emu Plains last weekend.
``It was a big wake-up call,'' Chan said. ``The season's still young and we took a lot out of the game.''
Chan recommended a switch to French rugby league to any player needing a change.
