Flash flooding across the Pilbara has forced the closure of Karijini National Park for at least the next 24 hours, with roads and sites within the park expected to be inundated with water.
Millstream Chichester National Park has also been closed following the heavy rainfall, with more to come in the next three days.
At the Karijini ranger's headquarters, 97 millimetres of rain was recorded in the 24 hours to 9am, while at Millstream Chichester, 125 millimetres was recorded.
Communities that could be affected by flash flooding over the next three days includes Karijini, Nullagine, Newman and Paraburdoo.
The Department of Environment and Conservation said the heavy rainfall in the area since about 3pm yesterday was expected to continue for up to 48 hours.
Travellers should avoid the area, and remain on major roads and take note of road closures and associated signage. Four-wheel drive vehicles can still use many roads within the Shire of East Pilbara, but are urged to exercise caution.
There is significant danger associated with flash flooding within the gorges, with water levels predicted to rise significantly making the area dangerous and unpredictable.
Travellers should stay with their vehicles and move to higher ground where possible, DEC warns.
Drivers should also not attempt to cross flood ways and streams.
All recreation sites within Karijini and Millstream Chichester national parks have been closed.
