THREE Penrith businesses scored nationwide recognition by winning Australian Small Business Awards in Sydney last Saturday.
Production Automotive, Complete Recruitment Solutions and Nepean Regional Security, all from Penrith, topped their business categories.
"The win was fantastic," Nepean Security's owner and founder, Gina Field, said. "Did I think I'd win? Absolutely not!"
Production Automotive's managing director, Mel Leyshon, who runs the business with her husband Brendon was similarly ebullient.
"It was overwhelming," Mrs Leyshon said. "It was a great night for us and for Penrith."
Complete Recruitment owner Linda Kemp said: "I feel intoxicated; I'm on an absolute high.
"I thought we deserved to win, but the other finalists were fantastic too."
All winners said their victories put Penrith on the map.
They also thanked their employees for making it possible.
The awards' judges looked at all aspects of small business, such as marketing, strategic planning and workplace safety.
Mrs Leyshon said Production Automotive staff were as committed to the business as she and her husband were.
"It sounds cliched but it's true," she said. "I've been off sick for a while, but the business hasn't missed a beat; everything just keeps going."
Mrs Kemp said she felt the same.
"Unfortunately not all my staff could be in Sydney on the night," she said. "But when I accepted the award, it was for the whole team."
She said they were good because they always tried to be the best.
"If you aim for perfection you're not going to strike it, but because we aim for it, we have a high rate of success," she said.
Mrs Field attributed her success to the fact that, even though she is the boss, she still puts on her security uniform and works alongside the staff.
"I have not lost touch with my business," she said. "I have to know what my clients want.
"Being out there, I'm having the same experiences as my staff."
Penrith mayor Greg Davies, who also attended the awards ceremony, said he was as pleased as the night's winners.
"It was great to see so many Penrith businesses make the finals then to see three of them win," Cr Davies said.
"Considering that there were businesses from across Australia there, it's an amazing success story for Penrith."
The mayor said the businesses could now promote themselves, and Penrith, in stronger ways.
"Good on them for having a go," he said.
