A CLUB stalwart's controversial departure was never going to be met with peace and quiet.
As news of Luke Lewis' decision to leave the club began to break, several past Panthers players took to Twitter to vent their thoughts.
One of the more vocal was 2003 premiership-winning star Ryan Girdler, who expressed his concern even before the rumours were confirmed.
"Not sure what's going on in Penrith at the moment! But if reports are right and a guy like Luke Lewis wants out, some questions need to be asked!" he wrote.
Once Lewis announced his decision, Girdler unleashed two further tweets.
"Everyone asks why players are not loyal anymore . . There is your answer! Spoke to Louie and he is devastated. We all are! Unbelievable".
He then wrote: "Was it Louie's decision to leave? You tell me . . . He still doesn't know why they took the captaincy off himth. . Sounds like a plan!"
Recent Panthers evictee Sandor Earl, who joined the Canberra Raiders two weeks ago, also addressed Lewis' exit when the rumours surfaced.
"If that story is true then some people really do have no idea in a losing side you get rid of the best player at Penrith and leader (sic)," Earl wrote.
He ended his tweet with a typical Twitter hashtag, writing "wow".
Former Panthers fullback Jarrod Sammut also expressed his dismay at the club when Lewis' release was made official.
"Penrith letting Luke Lewis go . . . No one is more a Panther then Lewis! Pull your finger out! Then again, we've always let our own go." Sammut wrote.
